Trailers Parked in Residential Areas

Whitehorse – The City of Whitehorse would like to remind residents of the current bylaw in place around parking for trailers, RVs, and other large vehicle equipment. These vehicle types cannot be parked on streets in a residential zone for more than 2 consecutive hours.

The bylaw extends to streets and roads, among other roadways.

The following cannot be parked in any residential zone: 

  • a vehicle having a gross weight exceeding 4,000 kilograms or a length exceeding 7 metres;
  • a vehicle with an attached trailer that it is not capable of pulling;
  • an unattached trailer;
  • any type of motorized equipment other than a vehicle;
  • a tractor or trailer unit that is not actively being used to load or unload. 

Large vehicles parked in residential areas pose a serious safety risk to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians as they can obstruct views.

The penalty for this particular infraction (section 69 of the Traffic Bylaw) is $50.

Please note the Zoning Bylaw does allow for trailers to be parked in front yard driveways from May 1 to Oct 31 under specific criteria and to be stored/parked on private property in rear or side yards at any time.  (See Zoning Bylaw 2012-20 for additional information)
