City firefighters, in partnership with the Government of Yukon Wildland Fire Management branch, are reducing the potential of fire through controlled burns in the City of Whitehorse.
Controlled burns reduce the risk of wild and human-ignited fires, remove ground fuels and grasses, and provide firefighters experience in and understanding of prescribed burns.
Controlled burns are planned during the spring, prior to green up. All burns will be held mid-week, and the fires will be extinguished the same day.
The following areas are scheduled for controlled burns, weather permitting:
- Long Lake: April 27 to approximately May 11
- Takhini North and weigh scales vicinity: May 12 to approximately May 19
- South Access/Robert Service Way: May 16 to approximately May 26
Weather conditions such as temperature, wind direction and wind speed will be monitored on a daily basis.
Please keep an eye on our social media pages for any potential changes to the schedule.
