The Federal New Deal for Canadian Cities and Communities is an agreement that transfers federal gas tax dollars to local governments to provide “a source of stable, predictable, and long-term funding”. These Federal dollars are channelled through the Yukon Government, and require municipalities to develop an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) to identify their infrastructure priorities.
The City of Whitehorse’s ICSP was approved by the Yukon Government in 2007 and is a comprehensive plan that examines and recommends a new sustainable way to invest, build, and manage infrastructure for the City of Whitehorse. The New Deal has allowed the City to invest millions of dollars in infrastructure upgrades that meet the objectives of clean air, clean water and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
