On Friday, June 24, 2011 the Canada Games Centre (CGC) was the target of arson.

Thanks to the help of City staff and emergency response personnel the fire was put out quickly and no one was hurt. The fire damage was largely contained to the ATCO Arena, but the majority of the building did experience extensive water and smoke damage.

Although brief in its duration, the fire caused millions of dollars of damage, closed parts of the facility for several months, and inconvenienced the thousands of users that have made the CGC part of their daily life.

Through the diligent efforts of City staff, local contractors, as well as the work undertaken by Belfor Property Restoration, the City was able to get the facility up and running in a relatively short time period.

The City would like to thank all members of the public for their patience during a difficult time. This video is a tribute to the community, staff, and everyone involved in the restoration of the Canada Games Centre.
