Household Hazardous Waste Days

Spring Clean Up Efforts Continue

Post Date:05/18/2017

In one week residents can join in on the City’s biannual Spring Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Days at the Whitehorse Waste Management Facility (6 km north of downtown at Mile 919.72 Alaska Highway). New for 2017 is the addition of an extra day to reduce waiting time and free up your weekend!

HHW materials include motor oil and their containers, solvents, gasoline, BBQ starter, anti-freeze, household cleaning products, compact fluorescent light bulbs, pesticides, aerosol cans and other containers under pressure such as bear spray and propane canisters. Commercial hazardous waste is not accepted and regular tipping fees apply for all non-HHW waste (including computers and TVs).

Key Points

  • HHW Day is on Friday, May 26th from 12pm – 5pm and Saturday, May 27rd from 10am – 5pm, at the Whitehorse Waste Management Facility (6 km north of downtown at Mile 919.72 Alaska Highway).
  • New this year is the addition of a Friday collection to give additional time to residents who may not be able to attend on Saturday.
  • Traffic control is being arranged for this event to reduce waits and increase safety.

“As part of our efforts to ensure that hazardous materials are disposed of properly and stay out of the landfill, the City hosts HHW Days. We ask that citizens take advantage of this free drop-off for their hazardous products and to keep these toxic materials out of their compost or garbage carts.”

Mayor Dan Curtis
City of Whitehorse

“We are excited to be offering an additional collection day this year. The City hopes this will capture hazardous waste from residents who may be planning a weekend excursion.”
