Fire Safety Reminder For RV Owners
Public Service Announcement
Whitehorse – On October 1st, members of the Whitehorse Fire Department responded to a report of a recreational vehicle fire in the MacRae subdivision of Whitehorse.
The vehicle was found to be fully engulfed in fire and, despite suppression efforts, was completely destroyed. No injuries were sustained by the owner or the responding firefighters.
An investigation revealed that the cause of the fire was a malfunctioning or defective circuit board in the propane furnace.
The Whitehorse Fire Department would like to remind all RV owners to review their owner’s manuals to determine appropriate furnace servicing requirements and to ensure that, at a minimum, furnaces are maintained and checked annually by a certified RV technician.
In addition, the Whitehorse Fire Department strongly recommends that carbon monoxide and smoke detectors be installed in every recreational vehicle used for sleeping purposes or ones that contain a fuel-fired appliance such as a propane fridge, stove or furnace.
