Disposal of Cardboard as Waste

Post Date:04/17/2020 9:00 AM

Whitehorse – In light of the temporary closure of both local recycling processors, the City of Whitehorse is temporarily accepting cardboard in mixed waste at the Waste Management Facility.

Regular tipping fees apply; however, the additional unsorted load fees are waived*.

City Council voted in favour of the decision at last night’s meeting. The temporary change will be in effect until at least one month after the public health emergency declared by the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Yukon on March 16th, 2020 is rescinded, or until future directions issued by the Chief Medical Officer of Health otherwise permit.

The City of Whitehorse remains committed to waste diversion and encourages residents to store their cardboard at home in a dry location, if possible, rather than taking it to the Waste Management Facility.

The City continues to follow the recommendations made by the Chief Medical Officer of Health of the Yukon.

The City will continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation in the territory to ensure it responds to emerging issues as they relate to City facilities, programs, services and events.
