Fire Department Implements Location Technology

Post Date:02/17/2021 2:13 PM

Whitehorse – The Whitehorse Fire Department has adopted a location technology called what3words to help find people in distress.

what3words has divided the world into a grid of 3m x 3m squares and given each square a unique what3words address.

In the event of an emergency, users can identify exactly where they are by opening the app and reading the corresponding three words to an emergency responder.

Whitehorse city limits covers an area of over 415 square kilometres. This makes it hard to find certain places and prevents people from describing exactly where help is needed in an emergency.

Emergencies can happen anywhere, from an accident along an unmarked stretch of road to an incident at a specific building entrance or industrial area.

The Whitehorse Fire Department is encouraging residents to download the free app and be ready to provide their what3words address in an emergency. You can download the app for iOS and Android or use the online map. The app works offline, making it ideal for use in the rural areas that might have a poor internet connection, and is available in over 40 languages, including French.

“The Whitehorse Fire Department is proud to partner with what3words to launch a unique location determination tool which does not rely on traditional addresses or familiarity with local landmarks to quickly and accurately locate a caller requiring emergency support,” said Whitehorse Fire Department Chief Jason Everitt. “The adoption of this mobile solution will save significant time in locating a caller and dispatching responders directly to their location. Help us help you and download the what3words app today.”
