Living in a boreal ecosystem means that the threat of a wildfire is a reality we face each and every summer season. The City of Whitehorse is dedicated to protecting our community from a potential wildfire through the development and implementation of multiple initiatives.
Wildfire Risk Reduction Strategy
The City has hired TransNorthern Consulting to recommend a Wildfire Risk Reduction Strategy for the city.
FireSmart is living with and managing for wildfire on our landscape. There are many levels of action throughout the government and community, but FireSmart is best known for the actions individuals can take to protect their homes and neighbourhoods from wildfires. They include:
- Understanding fire risk
- Making your house more fire-resistant
- Maintaining and choosing fire-resistant landscaping around your house
Personal Green Fuelwood Harvest Pilot Project
The City of Whitehorse and Government of Yukon are working together to explore new tools for reducing the wildfire risk.
While removal of dead wood for personal firewood is a longstanding use in selected areas, a new pilot project will allow standing live trees to be harvested as well.
The Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse are working collaboratively to reduce the risk of wildfires in Whitehorse this spring using prescribed burning. Learn more.
