SUMMARY:Household Hazardous Waste
DESCRIPTION:Most households and businesses have hazardous waste. It could be used oil from vehicles\, fluorescent light bulbs\, expired bear spray\, cleaning products\, and many others. Proper disposal is important to ensure these materials don’t end up polluting the air we breath or the water we drink. You wouldn’t pour these items onto the ground\, so why put them in your garbage? Not sure if it’s household hazardous waste (HHW)? Use the What Goes Where sorting tool to find out! \nResidents can dispose of their HHW for free at the Waste Management Facility (WMF). There are two locations within the facility to drop off your HHW. Please note the times and days specified below. \nKBL Environmental Drop-off\nMondays\, Thursdays\, and the first Saturday of each month\n9 am to 4 pm\nFor: Waste oil\, antifreeze\, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)\, automotive containers and oil filters.\nClick here to see a detailed list of accepted items. \nCity of Whitehorse Drop-off\nSaturdays\n9 am to 4 pm\nDrop off all other HHW here.\nClick here to see a detailed list of accepted items.\nSupported by the Department of Community Services (YG). \n \nCommercial Hazardous Waste\nThe industrial\, commercial\, institutional\, construction and demolition sector must handle hazardous waste responsibly. For more information on commercial hazardous waste visit Yukon Community Services (YG) hazardous waste website. Click here to learn more.  \nHandling Hazardous Waste\nHazardous materials do not belong in your garbage bin! Here are some things to keep in mind while handling and transporting hazardous waste: \n• Package hazardous waste properly; do not transport fluids in open buckets and do not mix fluids\n• Tape ends of rechargeable batteries (transportation safety regulations require this for shipment)\n• Be careful not to break fluorescent bulbs when transporting; breaking them releases harmful mercury vapour\n• Keep items in the original packaging when possible so that the waste can be easily identifiable\n• Paint thinners\, stains and cleaners are to be disposed of as hazardous waste\n• Latex paint cans should be opened and left to dry and disposed of with your regular garbage \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaterial\n• Aerosols and empty aerosol containers\n• Antifreeze and brake fluid\n• Cleaning chemicals\n• Fluorescent light bulbs\, fluorescent light ballasts manufactured before 1980\n• Gasoline\, propane\, solvents and waste oil\n• Herbicides and pesticides\n• Alkaline and rechargeable batteries\, vehicle batteries\n• Stains and oil paint products\n• Other products labelled as corrosive\, toxic\, reactive\, explosive\, oxidizing\, poisonous\, infectious or flammable\n\n\n\nRequirements\n• Must be separated from regular waste.\n• When mixed with regular waste\, could trigger unsorted waste charges at the Waste Management Facility.\n• The only exception is car batteries: these can be dropped off for free at the Waste Management Facility or at Raven ReCentre.\n\n\n\nServices\n• For commercial hazardous waste collection services contact General Waste Management or KBL Environmental Services.\n\n\n\nGood To Know\n• Alkaline and rechargeable batteries can be dropped off at Call2Recycle depots: Staples and Raven ReCentre.\n• More information visit the Government of Yukon’s hazardous waste page here.\n• Pharmaceutical waste can be taken to your nearest hospital\, nursing station or pharmacy.
