After a successful pilot program in 2024, the City is expanding neighbourhood traffic calming measures in 2025.
Seasonal measures include:
- A Cul-de-sac Pilot Project will be introduced on Eugene Avenue in Whistle Bend to prevent shortcutting by drivers. A temporary road closure at Leota Street will be piloted starting August 7 until the end of September. Eugene Avenue is a local road which is designed to allow residents to access their homes with minimal through traffic. Many drivers shortcut through Eugene Avenue, causing safety concerns for residents. Active transportation users will be able to pass through and drivers are encouraged to use Witch Hazel Drive.
- Speed Cushions will be installed on North Star Drive next to Copper Ridge Park.
Year-round measures include:
- Traffic-calming curbs will be installed at Thompson Road and Turner Crescent North, Thompson Road and Wilson Drive South, Falcon Drive and Finch Crescent, Pine Street and Ponderosa Drive, and at Rhine Way and Normandy Road.
- Line painting aimed at encouraging drivers to reduce speed in school and playground zones will be added on roads next to Gilles Laprés Memorial Park, Copper Ridge Park, Wolf Creek Park, and Dolly Varden Park.
- Speed humps will be put in place on Engelmann Drive, Maple and Oak Street, Wilson Drive and Elm Street.
In addition to neighbourhood traffic calming measures, the City is also implementing neighbourhood speed reduction measures and developing a Vision Zero Policy and Safe Mobility Action Plan.
