The City of Whitehorse is seeking residents passionate about wildfire safety to work with neighbours to reduce wildfire risk to the community.
The FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program helps neighbours work together to reduce wildfire risk. Groups make a plan and take steps to make that FireSmart plan a reality – initiatives like yard clean-ups, chipping days and more.
FireSmart Canada will provide up to $1,000 to support groups that join the program.
Groups first need a Neighbourhood Champion who rallies neighbours and serves as a contact point between a City FireSmart specialist and residents. The Neighbourhood Champion is also responsible for submitting required documents.
Each Neighbourhood Champion will work with a City of Whitehorse FireSmart specialist to undertake an assessment, plan and organize community events using FireSmart funding, and celebrate when the neighbourhood earns official FireSmart recognition.
For those taking on the role of Neighbourhood Champion, it’s an opportunity to enhance safety around your home and neighbourhood, connect with neighbours, access resources that will help your community and take on a leadership role in helping to keep Whitehorse safe from wildfire.
Applications for funding are now open. The deadline to apply is January 31, 2026.
Please email [email protected] to become a Neighbourhood Champion and get assistance with your application, and visit firesmartcanada.ca for more information on the Neighbourhood Recognition program.
