Waste and Compost
All waste generated in the Whitehorse urban catchment basin is transported to the Whitehorse Waste Management Facility, owned and operated by the City of Whitehorse. All material being transported to the landfill must be sorted and adequately secured.
Organic waste is brought to the Compost Facility to be processed. Separating organic waste also reduces methane production, a potent greenhouse gas. Once ready, the City offers two formats for compost to meet your needs:
- bagged compost for small-scale garden projects, and
- bulk compost for more significant projects such as landscaping and agriculture.
Our compost meets the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) standard, making it approved for use in organic operations.
Before heading to the landfill, please note there are additional fees for unsorted loads (see our Waste Sorting Page).
What Goes Where?
When it comes to sorting our waste, nobody enjoys the guessing game. Our What Goes Where app makes sorting your waste a snap.
Sorting your waste is easy with our What Goes Where app. Search for an item and we’ll give you local options for recycling, composting, or disposal. If you can’t find a given item, check back soon, as the list is continuously updated. Or view our sorting guide.
The City of Whitehorse Waste Management Facility (WMF) is located approximately six kilometres north of downtown Whitehorse at Mile 91972 (Mile 919.72) on the Alaska Highway. The WMF includes the landfill, compost facility, and transfer station. Find the WMF turn-off on Google Maps.
