Controlled Waste must be sorted and separated before disposal. See the tipping fee list for the fees to dispose of these items.

Check out these sorting guides if unsure where to put your controlled waste.

Banned Waste

Some waste is banned from the Waste Management Facility. However, some types of banned waste do have local disposal options.

Check out these sorting guides if you are unsure where to put your banned waste.

Recyclables

Recyclables should be brought to a local recycling depot. Residents can bring recycling to either of the following locations:

Note: Non-beverage glass (such as jars) and styrofoam are not recyclable in Whitehorse. Please place these items with general waste.

Starting February 3, 2024, residents will be able to dispose of their household hazardous waste (HHW) for free, every Saturday from 9 am – 4 pm at the Whitehorse Waste Management Facility.

HHW materials include liquid paint, motor oil and their containers, solvents, gasoline, BBQ starter, anti-freeze, household cleaning products, compact fluorescent light bulbs, household and car batteries, pesticides, aerosol cans and other containers under pressure such as bear spray and propane canisters. For a full list of items, visit yukon.ca/en/dispose-hazardous-waste.

Dropped off material should be properly labeled/identifiable. Commercial hazardous waste is not accepted and regular tipping fees apply for all non-HHW waste.

Which product do I need? What’s the difference between compost and mixed compost?

  • Compost product is ideal for adding to existing soil to condition and add nutrients.
  • Mixed compost (blend of compost and sand) is ideal for empty garden boxes, new gardens, and lawn applications. Vegetable and flower gardeners sometimes add peat moss to the blended product too.

Bulk compost pick-ups must be scheduled by calling 867-668-8350 ext. 4. Bulk compost will be available as of May 18.

Note: A friendly reminder that what you feed your Green Cart helps us produce our OMRI-certified compost! Please keep contaminants out!
