Annual Pool Maintenance Closure

Whitehorse Lions Aquatic Centre will be closed from August 14-September 6 for its annual pool maintenance.
The pool re-opens September 7. 

What happens during this time?

  • We repair/replace broken and chipped tiles. 
  • Pumps are taken apart, cleaned and put back together. 
  • All drain grates are scrubbed and cleaned. 
  • All areas of the pools are scrubbed clean. 
  • All change room lockers are cleaned and polished. 
  • All showerheads are removed and descaled. 
  • Air Handling unit filters are replaced. 

Did You Know?

  • It takes 8 hours to drain the Lap Pool.
  • The Leisure Pool has 12 pumps alone (including circulation, feature and treatment pumps).
  • 900 Filters are replaced annually at the CGC
  • The Leisure Pool holds 808,333 cups of water.
  • We have 336 lockers at the Aquatic Centre.
  • Waste heat from the arenas heats the pool water.
  • The Lap Pool takes 8 hours to fill, 2 days to heat the water to 27ºC and 3-5 days to get the chemicals balanced.
  • The lap pool contains 950,000L of water, Leisure pool 225,000L, and the Swirl 15,000L.
  • Did you know that the “pool smell” is not from the chlorine in the water, but from chemicals that are formed when the chlorine reacts with contaminants? Have you noticed our pool doesn't have that strong chlorine smell? That's because we are able to keep contaminants low with our ozone cleaning system.
  • The Lap Pool contains nearly a million litres of water, including pipes and filtration equipment.
  • The largest water pump in the pool is the one that creates the current in the Lazy River – it is 40HP
