FireSmart projects planned

This fall, the City of Whitehorse is launching FireSmart initiatives in Cowley Creek and Mary Lake aimed at reducing wildfire risk throughout the city. 

With funding from the Government of Yukon, this work will complement the City’s existing FireSmart program, continuing to improve wildfire resilience around Whitehorse.  

The first project began Sunday, August 30, in the Cowley Creek area, near the intersection of the Alaska Highway and Salmon Trail.  Work is expected to continue until November.  

The City’s contractor is: 

• Felling trees to increase spacing and reduce fuel load 

• Removing tree branches 

• Reducing debris on the ground 

While work is being completed, residents may notice equipment, noise, and some temporary trail closures. 

Detailed maps, FAQs and the status of salvageable fuel wood is available at wildfires.services.yukon.ca. Notifications will be provided when wood is available.
