Internet, phone and cell service disrupted by wildfire activity

            May 11, 2024

Internet, phone, and cell service in the Yukon, Northern BC, the Mackenzie Valley and the Beaufort Delta regions has been disrupted by wildfires in BC and NWT. Northwestel has started repairs on the fibre line 12km of Fort Nelson, but there is no timeline yet for full services to be restored.

Some cable internet, landline, and cell service in the Yukon is working.

If you need emergency help, always try calling 9-1-1 first. If you can’t reach 9-1-1, in Whitehorse, you can find emergency vehicles at:
            > Canada Games Centre
            > Qwanlin Mall/Independent
            > Gas station in Porter Creek at Wann Rd & Alaska Hwy.
            > Whistle Bend roundabout
            > Rest stop at the top of South Access/Robert Service Way

You can also contact emergency services via:
            > Security guards at Superstore, Cornerstone building at 7th and Main
            > Yukon Inn front desk
            > Sirius Security patrol vehicles from 6pm to 6am

You can also get help at the RCMP detachment (4th Ave), and both Whitehorse fire halls (105 Black St, and at the top of Two Mile Hill).

In communities outside Whitehorse, call emergency healthcare by using the phone on the outside of the community health centre, or at the local RCMP detachment. In Old Crow, knock on the nursing station door.

The Alaska Highway (Hwy 97) is closed at Fort Nelson, and the highway to Fort Liard (Hwy 77) is closed. The Stewart-Cassiar Highway is still open. The Robert Campbell Highway is closed north of Watson Lake (km 40) due to flooding from a beaver dam release.

Bylaw Services will be conducting proactive patrols throughout Whitehorse from 8:30am-4:30pm. Officers will be driving throughout neighbourhoods and are available if residents require assistance. Bylaw services is located at 305 Range Road. The main entrance and receptions area will be staffed from 8:30am-4:30pm.

If you’re getting this update, please share this information with your neighbours. Please check on people you think may need extra help. Check with your employer to see if your company or agency is getting involved in the outage mitigation. Thank you and stay safe!

For updates, please listen to local radio, visit the City of Whitehorse and Yukon Protective Services on Facebook, and www.yukon.ca/emergencies (you may not be able to access the website at this time).
