Work will be underway at the Selkirk Water Treatment Plant overnight on Tuesday, February 25
The City’s contractor, Wildstone Construction and Engineering Ltd., will be doing preparation work for a ultraviolet (UV) light treatment system installation at the plant, scheduled to occur in March.
Water demand in Whitehorse is typically at its lowest overnight. The work is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. and take approximately six hours to complete.
The temporary shutdown is not expected to create any disruptions to water or sewer service, or water pressure. The City will continue to meet or exceed capacity required for fire protection and resident demand.
As part of this work, there will be a slight increase to chlorine levels in the water supply for a short period of time. Residents of Riverdale may notice a slight increase in chlorine taste and smell in their drinking water. Whitehorse drinking water remains safe to drink.
The elevated chlorine levels are not anticipated to last more than 24 hours and will continue to meet the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality.
The UV light treatment installation at the Selkirk Water Treatment Plant is part of a phases project that will see improvements put in place to support increased water demand for the city’s growing population and ensure year-round access to potable water.
