Whitehorse has officially re-certified its status as a winter city. With the recent heavy snowfall and drop in temperatures, here’s what residents can expect in the days and weeks ahead. Residents are also reminded that snow clearing is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe and accessible for all residents.
Roads and paved trails
City crews and contractors worked throughout the storm and continue this week on Priority 1 and 2 transportation routes. Scheduled work on Priority 3 roads continues this week, though additional snowfall could cause delays.
Extreme cold temperatures forecast for this week could impact scheduled snow removal. Ploughing and sanding will continue, but snow removal (loading and hauling away) may be delayed due to extreme cold in order to protect staff and equipment.
Residents are reminded to watch for signage and temporary parking restrictions and keep obstacles off roads.
Please slow down and give crews space to work safely as they keep our roads and trails safe and accessible for all residents. We appreciate your patience and cooperation.
Stay tuned to the City’s social media channels and visit whitehorse.ca/snow for updates on scheduled snow removal.
Drivers are reminded to use winter tires, clear all snow and ice from windows before driving, drive cautiously, and budget extra time to get to your destination.
Residential properties
Owner/occupiers of residential properties have until 48 hours after a snowfall to clear any sidewalks or lane crossings along your property.
Any snow you clear must stay on your property and cannot be placed on the roadway.
Fire hydrants on your property must be clear of snow and ice, and accessible.
Commercial properties
Commercial property owners have until 11 a.m. the day after a snowfall to clear snow and ice from any sidewalks, lane crossings, accessibility ramps bordering your property, and accessible parking spots. Clear the sidewalks to allow passage for all users. Please do not place snow around parking meters, fire hydrants or infrastructure.
Any snow you clear must remain on your property or be disposed of at the City’s snow dump.
Fire hydrants on your property must be clear of snow and ice, and accessible.
If you have concerns about snow clearing or notice properties that are not being properly maintained, please use our online Report A Problem form or email Bylaw Services at [email protected].
