As winter begins to settle in, the City is reminding residents that snow clearing is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe and accessible for all residents.
Residential properties
Owner/occupiers of residential properties have until 48 hours after a snowfall to clear any sidewalks or lane crossings along your property.
Any snow you clear must stay on your property and cannot be placed on the roadway.
Fire hydrants on your property must be clear of snow and ice, and accessible.
Commercial properties
Commercial property owners have until 11 a.m. the day after a snowfall to clear snow and ice from any sidewalks, lane crossings, accessibility ramps bordering your property, and accessible parking spots. Clear the sidewalks to allow passage for all users. Please do not place snow around parking meters, fire hydrants or infrastructure.
Any snow you clear must remain on your property or be disposed of at the City’s snow dump.
Fire hydrants on your property must be clear of snow and ice, and accessible.
Roads and paved trails
City crews were out sanding roads on the weekend and will continue to maintain roads and paved trails throughout the winter in accordance with the City’s Snow and Ice Control Policy.
Once snow removal begins, the City will provide a weekly update on areas scheduled for snow removal, including hauling snow away. Stay tuned to the City’s social media channels and visit whitehorse.ca/snow for updates.
Please slow down and give crews space to work safely as they keep our roads and trails safe and accessible for all residents.
Drivers are reminded to use winter tires, clear all snow and ice from windows before driving, drive cautiously, and budget extra time to get to your destination.
If you have concerns about snow clearing or notice properties that are not being properly maintained, please use our online Report A Problem form or email Bylaw Services at [email protected].
