Celebrating Whitehorse’s Sister City Relationship With Lancieux

            August 21, 2024

The City of Whitehorse is marking the 24th Anniversary of our Sister City relationship with Lancieux, France.

The City of Whitehorse and l’Association franco-yukonnaise invite the public to join in celebrating our relationship with Lancieux at noon on Tuesday, August 27 at City Hall. The Lancieux flag will be raised and a reception will follow.

The Sister City relationship between Whitehorse and Lancieux promotes international friendship between France and Canada as well as the sharing of cultural and educational opportunities.

Both cities also share a bond based on the proud memory of a famous resident, poet Robert Service, who lived in Lancieux after his time in the Yukon.

            Quotes:
“We are grateful for our close friendship with Lancieux. Our Sister City relationships provide exciting opportunities to foster cross-cultural exchange and understanding while enriching our communities. For over 20 years we have enjoyed a strong relationship with Lancieux that has been championed by our dedicated local Francophone community, sharing Francophone culture and education. Thank you to l’Association franco-yukonnaise and our friends in France who keep our bonds with Lancieux strong and vibrant.” – Whitehorse Mayor Laura Cabott

“Although these two cities are geographically distant, they have forged a deep bond as sister cities. This exceptional relationship, nurtured over the years, testifies to the importance of collaboration and cultural exchange, reminding us that friendship transcends borders and distances.” – Association franco-yukonnaise President Edwine Veniat

            Additional info:

            • The Sister City relationship between Whitehorse and Lancieux was established with the assistance of l’Association franco-yukonnaise on August 28, 2000.
            • L’Association franco-yukonnaise is the official voice and leader in the development of the Yukon French-speaking community since 1982, and aims to improve the quality of life of Yukon Francophones.
