On behalf of City Council, Mayor Kirk Cameron has issued the following statement:
“September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The impacts of Canada’s residential school system continue to be felt in our city, our territory and across our country.
The City of Whitehorse recognizes this important day to reflect on our country’s legacy with residential schools, and to honour the victims, survivors, their families and communities.
It is important to listen to those with lived experiences to better understand the enduring and widespread effects of the residential school system. Residents are encouraged to learn more about the history of First Nations in our community, and to participate in community events that provide opportunities for learning, reflection, healing and ceremony.
Whitehorse is located on the Traditional Territories of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and Kwanlin Dün First Nation. The City is committed to working in partnership with both self-governing First Nations to advance reconciliation and work together to ensure a brighter future for all.”
