National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On behalf of City Council, Mayor Kirk Cameron has issued the following statement:

“The City of Whitehorse recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30, as an important opportunity to acknowledge and reflect on the history of residential schools in Canada.

It is also a day to honour the victims and survivors of residential schools along with their families and communities.

In Whitehorse, as in communities across the country, we continue to experience the effects of Canada’s residential school system.

As we move along the path of reconciliation, we need to continue to listen to those with lived experiences so that we can learn and educate all citizens about this significant aspect of our country’s history.

We urge citizens to read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, and to participate in community events that provide opportunities for learning, reflection, healing and ceremony.

Whitehorse is located on the Traditional Territories of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and Kwanlin Dün First Nation. The City recently reaffirmed the Declaration of Commitment to reinforce its commitment to working in partnership with both self-governing First Nations to advance reconciliation and work together to ensure a brighter future for all.”
