A section of the Millennium Trail in Riverdale is being closed out of an abundance of caution, as erosion continues to affect the area.
On May 29, signs and barricades were installed along the trail warning residents of an undercut bank along the river encroaching close to the trail.
Further monitoring indicates that erosion is continuing and the risk to public safety has increased.
This section of the Millennium Trail will be closed to users starting June 2, at 3 p.m.
Temporary fencing will be installed around the eroded area to protect public safety.
A temporary detour will be established from the Robert Campbell Bridge along the sidewalks on Lewes Boulevard and Nisutlin Drive for pedestrians, and along the Lewes Boulevard bike lanes to Nisutlin Drive for cyclists, reconnecting with the Millennium Trail at the pathway access near the Alsek Road intersection.
Users can continue to access sections of the Millennium Trail up to the closure point, but will need to turn around or use alternative trails away from the river. The interim closure is expected to remain in place until at least the end of next week.
Residents are asked to follow signage and avoid the closed section of trail. Work is underway to set up a detour to re-establish connectivity along the Millennium Trail.
The City thanks the public for their patience and cooperation.
