Whitehorse Mayor Kirk Cameron has issued the following statement:
“It is with immense sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Mike Gau, Director of Development Services with the City of Whitehorse.
Mr. Gau began working for the City of Whitehorse in 2000. He served in several different roles over the past 25 years, starting as a summer student before working as a Planner and later the Supervisor of Building Inspections and Manager of Planning and Building Services. He served as Director of Development Services since 2012.
During his time with the City, Mike oversaw the development of four Official Community Plans. He also helped integrate environmental and sustainability into City operations, improved public engagement and guided the City’s Planning, Land and Building, Economic Development and Transit Departments.
Mike Gau was a warm, friendly and hard-working individual that dedicated his life to public service. He made countless contributions to the City of Whitehorse and mentored many employees throughout his career. He was also a passionate hockey player known for his kindness and sense of humour.
Mr. Gau’s loss is devastating for our organization and our community. He made a lasting impact on the City of Whitehorse and the people who work within it.
On behalf of City Council and the City of Whitehorse, we offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
Flags will be lowered to half-mast at City facilities to honour Mr. Gau.”
