Whitehorse Mayor Kirk Cameron has issued the following statement:
“By initiating a trade war with its closest trading partner, the United States has taken unprecedented action that threatens the Canadian economy and therefore all of us.
Whitehorse City Council is deeply concerned about the impacts on our local businesses and workers and is engaging with partners to ensure a coordinated response to the American tariffs announced on February 1st.
We remain hopeful that leaders across North America can find a quick resolution to this situation to avoid unnecessary economic impacts.
We commend the strong leadership of the Team Canada approach. The City of Whitehorse fully supports the Government of Canada’s response to the American tariffs. We are committed to working in partnership with the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon to defend the interests of our citizens, Yukoners and all Canadians.
I intend to join Canada’s Border Mayors Alliance to advocate alongside Canadian municipal leaders and ensure the perspectives of municipalities are reflected in the national response to this situation.
Whitehorse is less than two hours from the American border and a key hub on the Alaska highway, the mainland route connecting Alaska to the lower 48 states. Citizens of Whitehorse have enjoyed close social and economic ties with our Alaskan neighbours for over a hundred years, and there are many dual Canadian-American citizens living in our community. At the same time, it is clear that we need to stand united with our Canadian family during this challenging time.
We stand united with cities, territories and provinces across the country. We urge all citizens to buy local, purchase Canadian goods and support Canadian businesses as we navigate this new reality.”
