The City of Whitehorse has completed a review of the Whitehorse Sustainability Plan (2015–2050), highlighting progress toward its goals over the past decade.
Since the Sustainability Plan’s adoption in 2015, sustainability has been integrated into everyday City operations, from infrastructure and transportation to waste reduction, energy use, and community wellbeing. Among these efforts are environmental and social considerations in City purchasing, transit service improvements, new infrastructure for active transportation, and Regional Parks which allocate land within the municipality to preservation.
The review shows progress on the 12 goals outlined in the plan, while also identifying challenges such as climate pressures, infrastructure demands, and the need for stronger alignment between data and funding.
Looking ahead, the City will focus on clearer tracking, stronger connections between sustainability and budgeting, and deeper collaboration with First Nation governments, other partners, and residents.
The Sustainability Plan will continue to guide City departments, with the Climate Action Plan also in place to help reduce emissions, plan for climate adaptation, and measure the impact of these changes.
Residents are encouraged to learn more about the Plan and how sustainability continues to shape Whitehorse’s future. Visit whitehorse.ca/sustainable to read the review, Sustainability Plan, Climate Action Plan, and learn more.
