Main Street Town Square

The Main Street Town Square was a pedestrian-oriented project in the heart of downtown Whitehorse. A portion of Main Street, between Front Street and Second Avenue was closed to non-emergency vehicle traffic from June 23 to September 5, 2023 to create a vibrant hub for people to eat, drink, socialize and shop.

“This piece is a visualization of recent tragedies to indigenous people.”

Created by Laurence Smith, with the support of Northern Cultural Expressions Society and Laurence’s Carving Brothers and Sisters.

Hear from artist Laurence Smith about what the artwork represents:

The Tlingit words on the road barriers mean:

Shaawát (Woman)
Xáat (Salmon)
Káa (Man)
Atyatx’i (Children)

Thank you to Yukon 125 for their support.
