Whitehorse is the Yukon’s Most Active Community

            July 23, 2024

WHITEHORSE – Whitehorse has been crowned the Yukon’s Most Active Community by ParticipACTION! The Wilderness City won the fifth edition of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, a national physical activity and sport initiative that encourages everyone to get active throughout June. The City has won a $7,500 prize to support local physical activity and sport initiatives.

With a rich blend of infrastructure, facilities, programming and access to nature, Whitehorse provides quality recreational opportunities for people of all ages throughout the year. Whitehorse is also home to a number of passionate recreational organizations and leagues that empower residents to stay active and build community connections.

A number of exciting recreational events occurred throughout the month of June – Recreation and Parks Month – including Active Commute Week, the Kids’ Triathlon, Recreation Pop-ups, and the new Fridays in the Park program. In June alone, over 500 residents attended Fridays in the Park events. The program continues into August, with events happening at a different neighbourhood park each week. Quotes:
“Our community has once again shown it can take on a challenge – this time the ParticipACTION Community Challenge. With so many trails throughout the city, excellent recreation facilities and a wide variety of rec programs, organizations and drop-in activities, it is little wonder we have such an active population. June is filled with outdoor recreation activities, including our popular Active Commute Week, and it is great to see so many residents getting active. Thank you to all those who participated in the challenge and to ParticipACTION for organizing this important initiative.” – Whitehorse Mayor Laura Cabott

            Additional info:

            • Whitehorse was one of 18 entries in the challenge from across the Yukon and one of 50 finalists from across the country.
            • 2024 is the third year that the City of Whitehorse has been named the Yukon’s Most Active Community. The City also won the title in 2021 and 2022.
            • The City will use the $7,500 in prize money for its Fridays in the Park program. Fridays in the Park invites families to a different neighbourhood park each week during the summer for games, activities, snacks, music and learning. Learn more at: whitehorse.ca/event/fridays-in-the-park
