Construction of new raised continuous multi-use pathway and sidewalk
            May 8, 2023

            Takhini Sanitary Trunk Main

Construction has begun to repair the Takhini sanitary trunk main.

The Takhini sanitary trunk main includes flows from the McIntyre and Takhini Mains, and accounts for 40-50% of the City’s total sewage.

On June 1, 2022, a tension crack was discovered, similar to others noted along the escarpment associated with landslides in 2022. The City is concerned that this current crack could lead to another landslide that could pull the existing sanitary main or cause the manhole to tip over, resulting in an uncontrolled release.

The City is installing 1.2 km of gravity main along Range Road, down a more gentle slope, and along the west side of Mountain View Drive.

The work schedule will involve several closures throughout construction:

            Dates Details
June to mid-September Northern end of Trans Canada Trail between Mountain View Drive and Range Road closed.
July to August Construction along the west side of Mountain View Drive, reduced speed. Pedestrian and cyclist traffic will be closed on Mountain View Drive between Range Road and Tlingit Street until mid-August.
August to October Range Road, north of University Drive closed*. Active transportation access will continue on Range Road via the sidewalk on the west side until Mountain View Drive can be reopened to those users. During this time, Route 5 northbound transit service will end at Yukon University. Riders coming from the Range Point neighbourhood are asked to use Route 401. Route 402 will detour onto the Alaska Highway and then onto 12th Avenue in Porter Creek.
October to November Range Road, south of University Drive closed*.

The final phase of the Takhini Sanitary Trunk Main project will affect the following Transit routes and stops starting Wed, October 25. These changes will be in effect until early November, when Range Road will reopen.

The current detour for Route 402 will remain unchanged.

Route 5 will be re-routed along Mountain View Drive to Yukon University. Updated schedule and route detour.

Range Road, between Two Mile Hill and University Drive will be closed during this phase of construction.
            • Use University Drive & Range Road – in front of the Whitehorse Correctional Centre (Route 5)
            • Use Public Safety Building (Route 3)

Range Point will continue to be closed.
            • Continue to use Route 401, or
            • Use the south-bound transit stop at Mountain View Drive & Range Road (Routes 5, 201)
Industrial Road will be closed to Route 5
            • Use stops along Quartz Road
For route and schedule inquiries, please contact Transit Services at 668-8394.

*Access to University Drive and Softball Yukon will be maintained throughout, and local signage will communicate closures. Road users should expect delays and plan accordingly.

For more information, you can contact Associate Manager of Engineering Services Gareth Earl at 689-1548.
