The City of Whitehorse is beginning work on new FireSmart initiatives aimed at reducing wildfire risk in Whitehorse.
These projects are funded by the Government of Yukon and complement the City’s residential FireSmart program, which supports residents to FireSmart their homes and businesses.
City Parks staff will be working with a contractor to manage wildfire fuel in forested residential areas by:
- felling trees to increase spacing and reduce fuel load;
- removing tree branches and limbs that can exacerbate fire activity; and
- reducing fuel load on the ground.
Starting in October, FireSmart initiatives will be happening in the following areas:
- Porter Creek – near the 2000-block of Centennial Street
- Hamilton Boulevard – near the Canada Games Centre and the Whitehorse Nordic Centre stadium
- Robert Service Way – next to the softball diamonds as well as across from and around the Robert Service Campground
While work is being completed, residents may notice equipment noise and some temporary trail closures.
Detailed maps, FAQs and the status of salvageable fuel wood are available at wildfires.services.yukon.ca.
We appreciate the public’s cooperation and understanding as these important safety measures are undertaken.
