On behalf of City Council, Mayor Kirk Cameron has issued the following statement:
“June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is an important opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the unique heritage, traditions, and knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
The City of Whitehorse acknowledges the rich history and legacy of First Nations and is committed to advancing reconciliation through actions that honour and reflect the many contributions of First Nations to our community.
Whitehorse is located on the Traditional Territories of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and Kwanlin Dün First Nation. The City is committed to working in partnership with both self-governing First Nations to develop Whitehorse in a sustainable way that meets the needs of our residents.
This week, the City of Whitehorse, Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Government of Yukon came together to announce the establishment of Chasàn Chùa (McIntyre Creek) Territorial Park. This area has long had significant importance for Whitehorse residents, and Kwanlin Dün and Ta’an Kwäch’än citizens have enjoyed and honoured this sacred place since time immemorial.
The establishment of Chasàn Chùa Territorial Park will create a lasting legacy in the heart of our Wilderness City. It reflects the strong partnerships and shared values of these governments and provides a model for moving forward together.”
