Managing Commercial Waste
Businesses are required to have their waste resources separated for recycling and composting. They must dispose of waste adequately using commercial services or self-hauling.
Effective March 26, 2018, the City’s Waste Management Bylaw states that food service establishments can no longer dispose of their organic waste in the garbage. The sorting of organic waste and recyclable material from garbage will give us the time to save for the estimated $13.5 million to close the existing landfill and $13.7 to open a new landfill.
General Waste
The City does not provide general waste collection services to multi-unit buildings (five units or more) or commercial businesses. They are required to handle their waste using commercial service providers or self-hauling. However, the City provides information and resources to building owners and managers to manage general waste at apartments, condos, and businesses.
Commercial Organic Waste
Since 2020, all multi-unit residential properties with five or more units (e.g., condos and apartment buildings) and commercial businesses (e.g. food industry) are required to enroll in the commercial organics collection program. With commercial organics collection, all multi-unit properties and commercial businesses can choose between ordering either green carts or green bins (2-yard or 3-yard) from the City to participate in the weekly collection program.
Please note, the commercial organics collection program separately from the residential curbside collection program.
Recylables
All recyclable materials can be self-hauled to the City’s Recycling Depot at the Waste Management Facility or contracted to a service provider for collection. View the Recycling Sorting Guide for the depot.
